Many whom decide to upload in the world of torrents, are curious about a few top priorities, such as safety, reliability, and speed. Everyone only has so much bandwidth capable of uploading. Those wishing to share multiple files to the masses, are simply unable to do so from their home connections, as it would hog all their bandwidth, or worse, risk some unwanted attention to their IP address.
Each and every day, there are anonymous p2p anti-piracy (more like anti-p2p) groups sprouting up, and accessing torrents at random, to log IP addresses. These groups are paid, and hired by typically corporations and greeding production companies in the industries of software, gaming, movies, and music, to "catch" those suspected of downloading copyrighted materials. Their methods are cheap, low, and for the most part, in-effective in stopping p2p and torrents. Though there are some casualties of any war, there are a few whom do get "caught", and even more who do not. This is a handy reference for those of you who need protection.
Many ask, "How can I hide my IP address and stay safe?". Well there are many answers, and it basically depends on what most suits your financial, bandwidth, and productive needs. Obviously there are many ways to stay safe, and many new developments in technology to also counter-act that safety.
Encryption. Encryption is something that is not necessarily new to the internet, but in fact, is "newer" to the torrent scene. Certain torrent clients, such as recent builds of Bit Torrent, Azureus, and uTorrent, all have the ability to enable file encryption. This encrypts traffic, which is somewhat a beginning to a line of defense, although its not necessarily the most productive method. Only the headers that are being encrypted, though. This prevents the data from being identified as BitTorrent traffic. The actual “stream” of data being sent is not being encrypted and doesn’t have to be. It's a start though, as the future of p2p I believe, will be over completely encrypted network traffic, to protect your anonymity. Although the founder of the Bit Torrent Protocol, Bram Cohen, is one to believe that this could cause future incompatibility issues between clients, as well as increase CPU usage. I suggest to him that safety outweighs this.
VPN. VPN's, or Virtual Private Networks, are typically a pay service, which allows you to tunnel all of your network traffic, through various global servers, rendering your personal information such as IP/location/MAC completely anonymous. This is by far the BEST method for using the Bit Torrent Protocol, or any other "mischievous" protocols. Nothing is more reliable, more secure, than having your connections tunneled in this manner. I personally also use this method, to do anything on the internet, even browsing, I stay connected to my VPN. (You never know who is watching or what info they can obtain from your IP) Although again, this method is not usually free, its very inexpensive. If freebies are for you, then this is not what you're looking for.
IP Filter. IP filters come in many shapes and sizes, but also require constant updating. A popular tool for use with uTorrent, is ipfilter.dat , and can be simply added to your directory with ease. The downside to this, is you must also use an ipfilter updater, and you must update regularly. What ipfilter.dat does, is protect you from "known" IP addresses of organizations known to attach themselves to torrents, and log IP's. This method can be found on many youtube or social networking videos, and is simple to follow directions and use. It is NOT fool proof, but again, any protection is better than no protection. Condoms do not prevent aids, but they do block certain STD's. Get my point? Moving on.
Protection Applications. PeerGuardian, and the recent builds of PG2, and up, are some of the most popular p2p safety software tools on the market. PeerGuardian works in many ways similarly to most IP filters, but again does not fully protect you. I again will state, that some protection, is better than no protection, condoms may prevent you from having children, but sometimes they break. This method, is also very easy to install, and a simple Google search can point you in the right direction.
Seedboxes. Seedboxes are another way to keep your IP hidden, and your safety completed. Although this is again not something that everyone needs, unless you are uploading, chances are you will not be making alot of use out of this idea. With a seedbox, you will simply add .torrent files unto your web interface, and then after completing the download to the webui seedbox, you can then use file transfer protocol, FTP, to download securely and privately to your PC. This is another good option, but unless you really need it, it can be another costly method.
Everyone should remember, that there are always many alternatives, and/or options to protecting yourself. If there were one piece of advice I could give, it would be that it is of course better to stay protected in some manner than no protection at all, hence the condom analogy. Attempting to prevent intrusion into your privacy is very important. Although there are MILLIONS upon MILLIONS of people using torrents daily, it is only a very small percent whom actually receive copyright letters, and an even smaller percentage that use protection. (Obviously the lack of protection is why the world is overpopulated )
Have you had an issue you feel needs resolved? Maybe a complaint, or topic you feel needs to be pointed out or discussed? Do you have any grievances with our site? This is the place to discuss this as a temporary thread of fair and balanced debate and open discussion. Freedom of speech exists here. Speak your mind.
We all have suggestions, ideas, and even complaints or unresolved issues at times. Typically, ET Forums is the area where we would all discuss these types of threads, but as some of you may know, or would like to know, we are in the process of rebuilding Extra Torrent's Forums. During this process, many members cannot post in the current forums, and until all future updates of the forum maintenance is completed, there is no way for the majority of our registered members to post their feelings regarding issues right now.
I think everyone should have a say and allow them to get things off their chests, or suggest or promote or debate ET rules, functions, activities, uploads, features, and anything as well as everything to do with our great torrent site, Extra Torrent. Nothing like a great debate to spark some interesting thinking, and to unite us all in a common cause. We need unity, fairness, and balance, to continue to provide you with the best possible experience of any torrent site. Which we plan to continue to do, show you why ET is the best, or how you think we can make it better.
I have opened this article, as a free minded and open debate for all to place anything they feel needs resolved, or anything they feel suggesting a debate about will be for the greater good of the ET community. In order for our "team" here to be 100% on the same page, our community's interests and opinions need to be addressed openly and freely, and with the current forums down to most, we needed this space opened as a temporary home for this topic.
I get PMs daily from those whom have suggestions or complaints or anything they want to be discussed, and I feel it's something that everyone should have a say in. Please in the comments of this article, feel free to state any ideals or views you feel need addressed, as we use this article as a temporary home. When ET forums are completely rebuilt and everyone can then openly access it, I will move this thread to that location. Until then, let your voices be heard! Freedom of expression is welcomed. Thinking outside the box is always a good thing.
Again I am sure if everyone at least has their voices heard it will resolve almost every major issue. There is no "I" in team, nor is there a "community" without discussion. If knowledge were truly power, then everyone learning what another has to say, think, or feel, can only be the key to supremacy. Alone we are wise, yet un-motivated, together, we have all the motivation and wisdom to accomplish anything. Every single one of you has something to offer. There is no excuse for not trying.
Nobody has written your destiny for you. Some of the most successful people in the world, are some of the ones who have made it past some of the largest failures. You become better at something by hard work and dedication. Trial and error. I expect great things from each of you, score yourself some points and don't let yourself down. Freely open us to your ideals and motivations, and maybe, you may gain an ear or two in the process. The community of Extra Torrent can only become stronger when all eyes are open, all voices are heard.
Special thanks to everyone who visits Extra Torrent daily, for without you, we do not exist. Thanks to everyone who is a part of this site's administration, including Almost Admins, Admins, and Super Admins. Thanks to all the uploaders who dedicate their time and effort to bring us the torrents we share. Thanks to all of you, for making ET the place to be. Now have at it

An Interview With A Titan
Hello everyone, this is an interview with Titan of the Resource Release Group. As of late, he has become profoundly linked to "quality" in the world of encoding, and respected for his releases. Today I sit down with him, and ask him his take on current events, encoding, and the future of P2P. First of all, thanks Titan for your time. I'll begin with a few routine questions, as we dig deeper into the mind of the one they call Titan.

Many do not understand the essence of the Bit Torrent Protocol. In order for torrents to live on, and continue the never ending cycle of free peer to peer file sharing, they must keep the swarm alive, by remaining as a seed once they have fully leeched a torrent. File sharing completely depends on this mechanism, and the methods of returning what you take, in order to survive.

Seed, .rar, RAR, Archive, Extension, Unzip, Unrar, Extract, Anti virus, spyware
In this article, I will submit to you the purposes of archived files, the many reasons they are in this format, and the various uses of archives. Learn to use this to your advantage, and transform your ratios, return seeding, and hard drive capacity all in the same article!
(RARs for seeding)
Many have asked, why are these files in this format? I'll explain. There are many purposes for this, one being, that it's easiest to share, replace, or construct individual archived files. For example, a certain scene release, is missing some information in .rar045 of .rar's 000-050? Well the scene can then release a single compressed fix for this, thus making it easier to transport a solution. Yes encoders make mistakes too, this happens, we are all human. (Sometimes ungrateful leeches seem to forget that
In the next diagram, I will show you the possibility of what can be done with an archived (RARs) file.
You see there are many .rar files in this image. When you have completed a download, you can also choose to simply seed back a single of these .rar files. Use this to your advantage, as you can take many .torrent files from various sites, and private trackers, and then, simply add the .torrent from (for example) the private tracker, for the same torrent which you already have. By doing this, it will allow a force recheck of the file(s) which are the same index of the .torrent, and allow you to use what you downloaded from various sites, to increase your ratio at other places. This can be used to gain upload credit without increasing download credit, simply by changing a .torrent file to one from a different tracker, and allowing a force-recheck. A simple but handy tool.
In versions of µTorrent 1.8 and up, uTorrent’s "Relocate" feature allows you to seed different files in a torrent from different places. For example, if you have files in a torrent on different drives, or different locations on the same drive.
As I explained before, there are many, MANY, who ask the question, "How do I open an archived .rar file?". Now, for the seasoned torrent-a-holic, this is common knowledge, but remember, not everyone is a veteran. For those of you sending me the countless private messages on this, let me show you a handy guide, for doing this.
In this image, you will see how WinRAR is used, to extract (open) an archived .rar series, to then produce a single file which is inside of them. If you do not have an extraction software, a popular client for this is WinRAR, which you can get by clicking the link above, or by searching around for a torrent to suit your needs.
One must simply right click on the VERY FIRST archived file, for example, .rar000, and then choose to "extract" the file, you can either choose a separate directory to extract to, (which I recommend) or choose the same directory. By doing this, you will extract all the .rar files at once, thus producing the content which is archived (compressed) and hidden inside of the rar extension.
Here is what you will see once coming out of this finalized extraction for example, in this case, it's an .avi video file.
Yes there is a treat hidden inside of .rar files for those of you new to the archiving scene. This method is tried and tested, and it's very easy to understand, after a bit of practice, I assure you.
Hopefully this small but simple post will stop the flood of private messages our staff is receiving regarding archived files. In the future I will make many more posts on advanced knowledge of the combination of torrent clients and archived files. This simplifies the basics.

The View From Atop The Mountain
Once I was told, that the view from atop the mountain, was high, and widespread. That once you reached those heights, the air would be fresh, the skies clear, and the sun would keep you warm. I have yet to feel this sun upon my back, yet to view the open skies, and yet to breathe that fresh air. That mountain top, that was so steep to climb, makes everything below, seem so far away.
That is how the world looks, when you cannot get any higher in your travels. You sense the sudden shock of reality, telling you that there is no more destinations for you to reach. Your heart then takes over your mind, and tells you, that there has to be more. Something else must be out there. Sometimes you know in your head, that the end is nigh, but if you have the heart of a pirate, daring to set sail on every sea, then you know deep inside, the journey has just began.
In recent months, I have debated on leaving this world that we all exist in, this torrent world. Am I afraid? Never. Do I feel bored? At times yes. Do I love ET? Of course. ET will always be my home. This place has been amazing, and I've watched it skyrocket in my time here. I've fought my way to the top, everywhere I have went in life, and what I have accomplished, I am proud of.
Whenever someone was in doubt, or needed a helping hand, xxxOBSCENExxx has always been there for them. The thousands upon thousands of PMs I have replied to, assisting others, I never grew tired of doing, as sharing is caring. Sharing my knowledge was something that I knew not only helped the person whom needed my assistance, but if you believe in "paying it forward", hopefully that person would then spread the same knowledge to others in need. This is what keeps the torrent world alive, all of you, who dare not turn the other cheek, to those in need.
Our little world, has always had it's competitions, from uploaders, to site battles, to release groups all trying to bring out the most quality at the fastest pace. Never did I expect the discontent from within, the walls of the fortress I was assigned to guard and protect. I have come to realize, that in fact, when you do nothing, you are hated, and when you succeed, there will still remain those who choose to try and cut you down. No matter what you do, those will attempt to make you into the enemy.
Whether this happens because of jealousy, or if this happens out of spite, I do not know. All I know is, recent contradictions and developments have led me to believe, that you can't win if you win, and you surely do not win if you lose. There comes a point, where you have to decide what it is you want out of something, and when you feel that you're unappreciated, especially from within your own "home", you tend to break that cycle, and find something new.
This is a struggle, that I am aware happens daily, and at times, I know we all go through this in our lives. Is it worth the loss? Maybe. Will you regret decisions you have made in the past? For sure. All I know, is each and every day for the better part of 2009, I have dedicated my time and my all, to bringing you, the members of our Extra Torrent community, quality releases, and also, trying along with the rest of the ET staff, to remove all unwanted content from this site. For the people of the world, not for myself.
I have always had strong feelings about file sharing, its a method, that is important to each of us, and most do not see, that the war on file sharing, is a war on our basic freedoms and rights as human beings. Censoring the internet, is a battle I have long stood in the warzone over, armed, and vocal, ready to fight the good fight. This is something I will continue to do, no matter where this long journey takes me.
I want to take the time to thank each and every one in the torrent world, who shares files. This is the biggest and most important thing you can do, to let your voices be heard. Together we can change the way industry does business, and force a modern technological take onto the way the world operates, and how digital media and all media in general is distributed. I want to thank all the members of ET, for sticking by us as long as you have, and watching this place grow into something beautiful, and also, let you guys know, this site will continue to grow and bring you amazing new features, and be the only place you need to go for all your torrent needs.
